What its REALLY like being a Dallas Wedding Florist

White and Green Wedding Flowers in Dallas Teas

The conception of Vivante Floral Design began exactly a year ago. I was in the car with my husband talking about the holidays that were rapidly approaching, when I suddenly looked at him with what felt like an earth-shattering idea. I said “What if I try something I’ve always wanted to try. What if I post pictures of flowers on instagram and try to sell Thanksgiving bouquets and see how it goes? Who knows, maybe it could turn into something”.

Two days later I made a wholesale account at the closest floral wholesaler I knew of and spent a whopping $110 to make 10 bouquets that my sweet friends purchased from me on instagram. By the way, 2 of the 10 bouquets that I sold where bought by my mom.

Since then, breaking into the florist industry in Dallas has been nothing but easy. There are THOUSANDS of wedding florists in Dallas Texas, let alone DFW as a whole. While my first few months in business were extremely sweet, 1 wedding a month certainly doesn’t pay the bills.

The first thing I wish someone would have told me before I got started would be to prepare to become a full time marketing director- which is certainly not my niche. Being a florist on instagram is like looking for a needle in a hay stack in many ways. It’s one thing to make luxury wedding flowers, and another to convert that into posts that grab peoples’ attention and convince them that YOU are the florist they have been looking for.

I spent two months making my website. TWO MONTHS! No one tells you these things! I mean who would have thought how many times you could re-think to phrase something so that it sounds just right?

I mean I practically spent a week just figuring out my tagline. Thankfully I have a husband who does some marketing and gave me a bit of his time.

So the content creating and marketing has been challenging, but I would say the third and final boss that has tried to defeat me my first year in business has been pricing.

Everyone wants to find a cheap wedding florist while still getting hire dollar product.

“How much can I get for $500?”.

“Why do wedding flowers cost so much?”

“How can I save money on my wedding flowers”

“Can you do everything that I originally mentioned but smaller so I can save more money”

Flowers are truly a luxury, and they have a luxury price tag too. Convincing people that your pricing is competitive is a true challenge. There are the people who do see the value in what you do though, and they make it all worth it.

There have been many, many challenges trying to figure this thing out. But at the end of the day, it is truly my passion to make art with flowers, and to make a bride’s wedding day the most beautiful that it could possibly be. It is so fulfilling to show a bride her bridal bouquet, and to see a huge smile come across her face and a big “EEEEK!”.

I’m still figuring a lot of this out. I’ve learned a lot the hard way too. But I LOVE being a DFW wedding florist and can’t wait for many, many more years in this industry.
